FIBA 2021, Haiti disqualified after 4 victories for a supposed problem of nationality

As part of the playoffs of the 19th edition of the Americas Cup FIBA 2021, the largest international basketball tournament in the Americas that takes place in Paramaribo, capital of Suriname from 24 to 30 June 2018, Haiti after 37 years of absence on the international scene the Haitian selection, under the leadership of the American coach, Matthew Brase has made a strong comeback in the world of international basketball. After 4 straight victories and qualifying for the semi-finals, Haiti were hopeful to see themselves in the final and win the title :Haiti - Barbados [78-62]Haiti - Monserrat [110 -50]Haiti - Antigua [76 -59]Haiti - Bermuda [96-60][youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nc5J0iTXyPo]But, within 12 hours of its semi-final match against Suriname, the International Amateur Basketball Federation (FIBA) decided to disqualify the Haitian selection from the FiBA Americup 2021 tournament, alleging that 9 of the players in the Haitian selection were born outside Haiti on American soil, invoking Article 3.21 of the Regulations.A situation that raised the indignation of the Haitian delegation and the Haitian Basketball Federation (FHB) which in a letter acknowledging the decision of FIBA, informs FIBA "of its decision to appeal to the Court of Sporting Arbitration" underlining that "The arguments will be presented so that the best decision for the development of the sport in Haiti is favored," affirming to FIBA "all the players of our list are Haitians in their own right and are not naturalized."Alph Ulysse, Vice President of the FHB, evokes a form of persecution against his team recalling "a person born of a Haitian parent automatically obtains Haitian nationality, regardless of his country of birth" which does not seem to take into account FIBA.In addition, a few hours after Haiti's disqualification from the rest of Americup's playoffs, FIBA forced our national basketball team to play a title match against Saint Lucia on Friday, threatening the FHB with a fine of 25,000 US dollars and an exclusion from all competitions of FIBA for 5 years, if Haiti refused to play this game.Match that Haiti played and won against St. Lucia [100 - 62]By: HaitiLibre | jUNE 30, 2018

Raiders Safety Joseph Hopes to Use Football to Help Native Haiti

A large tattoo from Karl Joseph's left shoulder through the center of his back, a detailed emblem also featured on the Haitian flag.

Joseph was born in the impoverished island nation and raised there 11 years before moving to Orlando, Fla. with his mother. That formative period helped define the Raiders safety's work ethic, commitment to family and his roots.

Joseph hasn't forgotten it. Haiti remains a part of him, bonded by a connection expressed well beyond body art.

That's where he spent one of life's biggest moments, shunning the spotlight to be with relatives in Haiti when the Raiders selected him No. 14 overall in the 2016 NFL4. That was celebration of where he came from on the day he became wealthy beyond childhood dreams.

"It keeps me grounded," Joseph said on NBC Sports Bay Area's Raiders Insider Podcast. "That's one of the reasons I went back for my draft party. Anytime I get a chance to go back, I take it. It makes you appreciate the little things you have, the luxuries you often take for granted. It also makes me hungrier to work hard, play well and give back. Every time I go the memories come flooding back, which hits the reset button for me. It gets ready to come back here, ready to work."

Joseph frequently visits family in his native Jacmel, a port town off Haiti's southern coast. He went back again this spring, but not on holiday.

He joined former Seahawks defensive lineman Cliff Avril's annual pilgrimage to Haiti, which is more than a fundraiser and photo opp. This group goes to work.

They helped build a school, supply a health clinic and run a football camp. They met with Haiti president Jovenel Moise, discussing issue pressing a beautiful in need of help for its poorest people.

"That's one of the main reasons I was excited to go on this trip," Joseph said of the weeklong charitable venture. "I've seen some of the work he had done out there, and I was ready to get involved. A lot of people go out there and put their name on stuff, but few want to interact with the people and get their hands dirty."

Joseph broke from the pack late in the trip to visit family still living in Jacmel. They toured the now rundown house Joseph grew up in, a moment, among others, chronicled on his Instagram page.

Joseph plans to join Avril's trip each year, and eventually start his own foundation focused on helping bring awareness, funds and infrastructure to Haiti.

He understands that performing well will help that cause.

"I have to continue to do my part on the field," Joseph said. "The better I play, the more I contribute to Raiders victories, the more people will pay attention. I need to use that to shine a light on issues in the country I grew up in."

Joseph believes he can reach new heights working with new head coach Jon Gruden and staff. The safety has played well in spurts, but doesn't believe vast potential has been reached.

"I don't even feel like I've scratched the surface yet," Joseph said. "I feel like I have so much room for improvement in every aspect of my game. I've improved my mental game this offseason, and fit into this new defense. We've come a long way as a group, and that I've made strides personally. I'm going to keep pushing, even during the down period. I have such high expectations for myself. I'm excited about the season. People haven't even seen the real Karl Joseph yet."

The real Karl Joseph is a thumper, someone who can play deep and aggressive near the line of scrimmage. He's part of a safety group that also features Marcus Gilchrist and Reggie Nelson, and will have a chance to thrive in Paul Guenther's defense.

That would help the Raiders win and bring attention to Joseph and the place he's commitment to helping.

"Football is my platform to give back there," Joseph said. "That's my purpose in life, to be able to make this an opportunity to shine light on issues (in Haiti) and give back. I cherish the chance to go back and see the place where I was born and family that was around during a critical time in my life. It's a special place to me."

Argentina Beats Haiti in Friendly as Lionel Messi Registers Hat Trick

Lionel Messi is ready for the World Cup.Argentina's leading man notched a hat trick Tuesday in a 4-0 victory over Haiti in an international friendly. It was just the show the fans were looking for at La Bombonera in Buenos Aires, considering it was their final home game before the soccer world's attention turns to Russia.Haiti never truly challenged Argentina on the other side and didn't have the firepower to keep pace with the all-time great.Messi Rounding into World Cup FormLook out World Cup, here comes No. 10.The box score says he scored three goals and assisted on Sergio Aguero's, but his impact goes far beyond the raw numbers. Argentina looked lost in its last game—a 6-1 loss to Spain—when Messi wasn't out there, but Tuesday was a much different story with one of history's greatest players creating in the open field, directing through balls—none more impressive than the one to Aguero—and darting past defenders.[embed]https://twitter.com/beINSPORTSUSA/status/1001622532506640384[/embed][embed]https://twitter.com/beINSPORTSUSA/status/1001624996853178368[/embed][embed]https://twitter.com/beINSPORTSUSA/status/1001625676535885824[/embed]The attention he draws just by being involved in a play opens up space for his teammates, and he sent a message to future opponents rather than rest ahead of the World Cup.Giovani Lo Celso took advantage of that space, and the combination of the two playmakers was a problem for Haiti's back line and gives Argentina fans hope there is more magic to come with soccer's biggest tournament on the horizon.Messi's first goal came on a penalty kick after Celso drew a foul inside the box, and the second came off a rebound of Celso's header from point-blank range.Seeing how Messi is 30 years old, this could be his last great opportunity to lift the World Cup trophy as the focal point of Argentina's attack, which is the one significant hole on his otherwise illustrious resume. While Messi will face much stiffer competition in Russia than he did Tuesday, he was clearly the best player on the field and is rounding into form before June. That figures to be a problem for the rest of the world. Argentina Beginning to Look Like One of the World Cup FavoritesThere were two different classes of teams on the field Tuesday, as Argentina controlled the pace, created a number of golden opportunities beyond the four goals and kept Haiti away from goalkeeper Willy Caballero. That was critical, as Cady Siregar of Goal.com noted starting goalkeeper Sergio Romero was out with a knee injury. It is difficult to look at the dominance and brilliance Argentina played with Tuesday and see it as anything but one of the World Cup favorites, especially given the competition it will face in Group D with Croatia, Iceland and Nigeria.According to the FIFA world rankings, Argentina is fifth, Croatia is 18th, Iceland is 22nd and Nigeria 47th. That doesn't exactly scream capable of keeping up with Messi, especially given how impressive he has been of late. Argentina Defense Doesn't Get the Test It NeedsIf there is one concern coming out of Tuesday's contest from Argentina's perspective, it is the fact the back line wasn't tested after an ugly 6-1 loss to Spain.Spain is the type of team Argentina will have to face and beat in the latter stages of the World Cup, and the defense didn't provide much reason for optimism even though it can point to Messi's absence as a reason the opponents were living on their side of the field. While Tuesday's shutout looks nice on paper, Haiti didn't bring the world-class scorers likely waiting for Argentina in Russia. In fact, Haiti managed a single shot with zero on goal compared to Argentina's 21 shots with 11 on goal, per ESPN.com.Argentina also controlled 75 percent of the possession, so it's not as if the defense was playing with its back against the wall for much of the contest. For now, the defense will have to point to the zero goals as evidence of a solid performance, but there are more difficult opponents waiting who will provide more daunting tests. What's Next? While Tuesday was Argentina's last game on home soil before its World Cup opener on June 16 against Iceland, it still has one more tune-up contest on June 9 against Israel.By: SCOTT POLACEK | BleacherReport | May 29, 2018

Herivaux called up by Haiti for May 26 friendly vs. Argentina

The match in Buenos Aires represents Argentina’s final tune-up for the World Cup.

Revolution midfielder Zachary Herivaux has been called up by the Haiti National Team for its upcoming friendly match against powerhouse Argentina and its star Lionel Messi. The game in Buenos Aires is Argentina’s final one before departing for World Cup 2018 in Russia. Herivaux is available for New England’s match this weekend vs Columbus Crew SC in Foxborough, but he’ll miss the next two — at Vancouver and home vs Atlanta United.

The Revs’ third-ever Homegrown Player was born in Japan, but he spent his formative years in Brookline, Mass. With a Haitian father and Japanese mother, Herivaux actually owns citizenship in three countries. He chose to represent Haiti internationally, following in the footsteps of his footballer father. He made his first appearance with the senior Haitian team in 2017, playing a full 90 minutes and notching an assist in a 3-3 draw, coincidentally, against Japan.

With Diego Fagundez unavailable vs Crew SC on Saturday, Herivaux — who made his first Revolution appearance of 2018 last weekend against Toronto FC — may be called upon to fill Fagundez’s number ten role in manager Brad Friedel’s high-pressing attack.

Bulls Abroad: Derrick Etienne Jr. called up for Haiti friendly vs Argentina

Etienne has gotten hot at just the right time as Les Grenadiers have come calling once again.

Derrick Etienne Jr., nicknamed The Haitian Messi, will have another opportunity to live up to that mantra later this month as he joins the Haiti national team for a friendly against Argentina.

On Wednesday, the Haiti national team released its 20-man roster for the upcoming friendly in Buenos Aires. On the list was Etienne, who will be poised to get his 6th cap for the team.

The call-up is particularly well-deserved for Etienne based on his recent form: match-sealing goals in back-to-back games against NYC FC and the Colorado Rapids. He has three goals and one assist in just 255 minutes of MLS action this season.

The timing of the match could cause him to miss the Red Bulls’ MLS home game against the Philadelphia Union on May 26th, or the road game against the New England Revolution on June 2nd.

As an international, Etienne has one goal for Les Grenadiers, which he got against Trinidad & Tobago in 2017 during 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup qualification.

Also called up for Haiti is former New York Red Bulls II defender Andrew Jean-Baptiste.

World Cup Countdown: 11 Weeks to Go - Haiti, the Nation That Stole Germany's Heart

In 1974, West Germany played host to the memorable World Cup of Johan Cruyff and Franz Beckenbauer. However, there were other heroes that year; men from a small Caribbean nation who briefly stole the hearts of a watching world.Haiti, a territory that shares the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic to its east, became only the second country from their small corner of the globe to feature in football's summer festival.

"It was extraordinary", Haitian defender Serge Racine, who was part of the squad which travelled to Munich in 1974, explained. "There were people who didn't know Haiti existed; people were asking us where Haiti was."

But those 22 men who made the almost 5,000-mile trip to Europe 44 years ago left a lasting impression on German soil and went some way towards putting their small island on the map.Although Les Grenadiers did not claim a single point in the tournament, they left West Germany with pride and adoration, partly due to the day XI amateur footballers shocked Italy's Dino Zoff. The Azzurri goalkeeper had not conceded a goal in 12 international games heading into the opening tie of the competition and had also been part of a Juventus defence who went 903 minutes unchallenged. But all that was quickly about to change."The crowd helped us a lot because we were adopted by the German fans", Racine reminisced. "When we played against Italy, there were 70,000 there, and every time we touched the ball, there would be cheering."

However, nobody watching on inside Munich's Olympiastadion could have foreseen what was to come, as 20 minutes in, Emmanuel Sanon, the only man in Haitian history to this day to score at a World Cup, rounded Zoff to give the 1973 CONCACAF Championship-winning side a shock lead.

"Italy had Zoff who had that incredible record", Philippe Vorbe, who provided the assist for the goal, said. "Once I got the ball at my feet I looked up, and I saw Sanon, who was in space because there was only one defender. Sanon was one-on-one with Zoff, and we were all transfixed wondering what he would do. Would he shoot? Would he try to go around him?"He dropped a shoulder, he took Zoff out of the game, and he scored. This was really the most beautiful joy of our careers, even of our lives; to score against Italy. It was so fantastic."Azzurri came back to win 3-1, but the amateurs from Haiti had provided a moment they or indeed the footballing world would never forget.

"The Footballers of Haiti, who came from the Caribbean for this World Cup knowing that at best they would be patronised, at worst dismissed as imposters, gave the competition one of its genuinely electric moments here tonight when they took the lead against Italy – by beating Dino Zoff, a goalkeeper who had not conceded a goal in an international match since September 1972", The Guardian read that evening.

However, the overwhelming pride, spirit and sensation that had been instilled into Haiti following their performance against Italy quickly diminished when facing Poland during their second group match, with the Eastern Europeans steamrolling the Haitians 7-0."It was as different as day is tonight in comparison to the performance against Italy", Vorbe, known today as his nation's most complete midfielder in its history, recalled. "We were literally destroyed by Poland. We lost 7-0, and I think it could have been more."It was a sad thing to happen. It was a sad thing for the World Cup, with so much sympathy for Haiti."

Despite losing their final group game to Argentina, which brought an end to the World Cup journey, the squad who had made the trans-Atlantic trip to West Germany to represent an unknown nation were happier, as again there was something to celebrate.

Sanon found possession 30 yards from goal before unleashing a thunderbolt through a crowd of Argentine players and finding the top right-hand corner of the net. The striker had restored levels of unrivalled joy, and had Cruyff or Beckenbauer not graced the tournament, it could have been held as one of the 1974 World Cup's most spectacular moments."It was a really beautiful goal", Vorbe said. "We ended up with two superb goals scored with honour."And despite going down 4-1 to Argentina, rounding off the tournament with three defeats from the same number of outings, it was Sanon's duo of sensational strikes that allowed Haiti to escape heading home bottom in the tournament's rankings.

"We managed not to finish last in that World Cup because we scored two goals", Vorbe explained. "Bulgaria and Zaire didn't manage to score, so in FIFA's classification Haiti came out as 14th out of the 16 teams. We were very happy with our World Cup."

Today, the squad of '74 remain men of history in Haiti as their only national side to have ever qualified for a World Cup."We have a lot of respect for the team of 1974", Haiti international and former Paris Saint-Germain forward Jean-Eudes Maurice said. "They put Haitian football on the world map. Now we're desperate to carry on and go as far as possible, and hopefully, there will be another generation like that."

Haiti will not be part of Russia 2018; however, the dream of Qatar in 2022 is still very much alive.

Serena Williams beaten by emerging talent Haitian-Japanese Naomi Osaka at Miami Open

Naomi Osaka defeated 23-times grand slam singles champion Serena Williams 6-3, 6-2 in the Miami Open first round on Wednesday, the latest big win for the emerging 20-year-old Japanese player. The pair were on serve in the first set of their first career meeting until Osaka, who won her first career title at Indian Wells last week, forced break point chances at 3-3 and Williams was unable to deal with a blistering backhand at her feet. The world No22 broke Williams again after a back-and-forth deuce battle to take the first set.Osaka’s powerful serving and relentless return game were even stronger in the second and she broke Williams to go 3-1 up and was never threatened again.  The match ended on an ugly unforced error by Williams, who hit a wide open forehand long to send Osaka into the second round, where she will face world No4 Elina Svitolina of Ukraine.“I was extremely nervous coming on to the court. I don’t know if anybody knows this but Serena is my favorite player,” Osaka said in an on-court interview.  “So just playing against her is kind of like a dream for me. I’m very grateful I was able to play her and it is even better that I was able to win.”The 36-year-old Williams, playing her fourth match since the birth of her first child in September, is still working her way into form and although she showed her trademark power, she struggled to move smoothly around the court. Some felt it was unfair that the Miami Open allowed Williams, an eight-times champion at the tournament, to play Osaka in the first round.  “Serena should have a special seeding, but also WTA should use the most current ranking, former world No1 Lindsay Davenport said on the Tennis Channel. “The men do it. It’s too big a tournament to have something like this happen.”Osaka’s win over Williams was her latest victory over some of the biggest names in the sport. She defeated Maria Sharapova, fifth seed Karolina Pliskova and world No1 Simona Halep in Indian Wells.By: The Gaurdian | March 21, 2018

‘Loving people is what I do:’ Brewers’ Brett Phillips spreads love during mission trip to Haiti

MILWAUKEE -- There are always a lot of smiles in and around the baseball fields at spring training, and maybe the biggest for the Milwaukee Brewers is from Brett Phillips.Every day that he's out on this field, Phillips is trying to make a difference while working to make the Brewers roster, but when he's away from baseball, he's making a huge difference for the people of Haiti."For me, it's just a matter of working hard, continuing to get better on a daily basis," said Phillips. The approach Phillips with his profession is the same he takes away from the field."Whether it's small or big, when an opportunity comes about, I just have to take advantage of it. It's just a matter of staying humble and not forgetting where I came from, and regardless of how much money I make in my career or my trophies I have in my trophy case, it's just a matter of staying humble, remembering where I came from and just being a good person overall. Loving people is what I do," said Phillips. In January, Phillips was showing his love for people by visiting another country."It was a mission trip down to Haiti," said Phillips. He joined fellow Major Leaguer Adam Wainwright and the Pittsburgh Pirates' chaplain Brad Henderson for something much bigger than just a foreign trip."We went down to a children's orphanage, and it was an absolute blessing. It puts things in perspective in my life," said Phillips. In spring training and throughout the season in the Major Leagues, Phillips and his teammates live a very special and privileged lifestyle, something far removed and even unknown to the kids he was with in Haiti."That's the glory of it. They don't care who you are as a person or what you do. They just want to hang out. They just want attention and love and affection. You know, that's something I can give them. We played soccer. You know, just be able to talk with them. It's just something they really enjoy. They climb on you. They're kids. They're little kids, so they just love the attention, and they don't get that because they don`t have parents and that's something that we go down there to do," said Phillips.Something else he's able to share with them is his belief in Jesus Christ, the true mission of this trip."Voodoo is actually the number one religion down there, where they believe that evil outweighs good, so they just believe evil's like, that's all there is instead of good, so for me, I hope I changed the process, the thought process. Just that God is good. People are out there trying to help you and there is good in the world, and I hope to be that good just to show them when they grow up that they can be good in the world too," said Phillips. For the guy with the most contagious personality on the baseball field, he's hoping it works as well for the kids at this orphanage in Haiti."I can't give them all the money in the world. I can't get rid of their problems, but for the day, I can hang out with them and make them smile. You know, that goes a long way to them and it goes a long way to myself. I think I gained more out of it than they did, so it was super eye opening, but I'm definitely going to do it again and continue to on a consistent basis," said Phillips.Phillips hopes to recruit other players to help those kids in Haiti next year and for the years beyond. The organization Phillips worked with is the Pittsburgh Kids Foundation.By: BRANDON CRUZ | Fox6 | MARCH 4, 2018,

Haiti book CONCACAF's final ticket to France 2018

  • Haiti qualify for FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup France 2018
  • Sheryl Jeudy scores winning goal in first half
  • Haiti will participate in the U-20 Women's World Cup for the first time

Haiti booked the final ticket from the CONCACAF region to qualify for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup France 2018 with a 1-0 victory over Canada in the match for third place at the CONCACAF Women’s U-20 Championship in Couva, Trinidad and Tobago.Sherly Jeudy scored the game's only goal in the 18th minute when she broke through Canada's backline and latched on to the end of a superb through ball by captain Nerilia Mondesir before putting her laces through a fierce shot that ended up in the top corner.Canada went in to the match as the favourites as they had defeated Haiti 4-0 in the group stage earlier in the tournament. However, Haiti put pressure on the Canadian defence which eventually led to Jeudy's stunning strike, which was Haiti's first ever goal against Canada in the history of the competition.Canada were forced to take the initiative in the second half as they went in search of an equaliser, but Haiti goalkeeper Kerly Theus and Co stayed focussed and disciplined throughout the contest and kept Jordyn Huitema and the Canadian attack at bay.By: FIFA | 28 Jan 2018

Adam Silver Says President Trump's References To Haiti, African Nations Were 'Discouraging'

NBA commissioner Adam Silver tells ESPN that he found President Donald Trump's recent alleged remarks about Haiti and some African nations as "discouraging" but believes that the NBA will not be deterred in its work within communities, according to Ohm Youngmisuk of ESPN.Trump was speaking with Republican and Democratic lawmakers when he questioned why the United States would accept more immigrants from Haiti and “shithole countries” instead of places like Norway. The White House did not deny his remark but released a statement that said Trump supports immigration policies that welcome “those who can contribute to our society.”"I think for both Michele [Roberts] and me, it is a reminder and an impetus to continue pushing forward with the kind of things that we can do together as a league," Silver said. "Sports continue to be a unique opportunity to unite people and it is a place where there is a rare sense of equality. Certainly we are proud that within the NBA you are judged by your performance on the floor, regardless of your background, nationality or ethnicity. ... To me, it is also reinforcement of how important it is that we stay the course in terms of the programs that this league has been operating for decades and new programs like NBA Voices that we are beginning this week.""I tend to be an optimist," he added. "Certainly as I am reminded of the history of this country, much of it which took place during my lifetime, there has been tremendous progress, there is no question about it. Having said that, we have a long way to go."Silver was in Memphis for several events on the weekend of the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s death. The weekend included a tour of the National Civil Rights Museum.By CHRIS CHAVEZ | January 14, 2018

From Haiti for Shady: Bills have an unsung hero, and punches the clock

As a freshman in high school, Vladimir Ducasse was starting to play more basketball and less soccer, his favorite sport growing up.After all, a child in Haiti, Port-Au-Prince to be exact, is expected to embrace the sport.Today, at 6-foot-5, 329 pounds, the Buffalo Bills are glad they have this athletic, gifted American Football player on the left side of the offensive line.Ducasse, left Haiti with his brother for Miami in 2002, wound up at a high school in Connecticut. Despite being raw, he played at the University of Massachusetts before being drafted by the Jets. He’s a long way from Haiti, and his workmanlike approach to football fits in perfect with what Buffalo Bills coach Sean McDermott is trying to accomplish. After practice this week, Ducasse stayed a few minutes extra to work on technique then went to the locker room alone, took his practice jersey and blue rib vest, his undershirt soaked with sweat. This was a guy preparing for a playoff game. He isn’t caught up in the 17-year playoff drought by the Bills or any of the storylines. He is an 8th-year veteran on his fifth team.“I’ve been sleeping and getting rest,” he said when asked about the hype surounding the city of Buffalo. “I’ve been driving home and coming back to work. From the minute we got here (for training camp), our head coach said, ‘Trust the Process’ and we are. We’ve had ups and downs but we’ve stuck together.”During an interview with the Batavia Daily News, Ducasse, or Vlad as players and coaches call him, doesn’t talk about his upbringing in Haiti, rather with his unique accent talks about the line coming together each week, setting records with running back LeSean McCoy.“When you have someone like Shady it makes your job easier, but whoever is back theRe, they all understand the game, I mean everyone knows what they are doing and it makes it easier,” he said, pausing for a moment, maybe realizing the magnitude of the playoffs, and said, “Every week we were getting closer and closer, it is a great group.”Defensive end Kyle Williams scored a touchdown against the Miami Dolphins last week and Ducasse made a devastating block to allow Williams to run in untouched.“I remember my time with the Jets, I played against him, he was always at a high level, I have tremendous respect for him,” he said. “Anytime you have a guy like Kyle - he’s been here so long - when he’s lining up that play, you know he’s going in!”So how does a guy make it from Haiti to an unsung hero on the Bills?“Some of my teammates in high school during my sophomore year, when I got up to 275 pounds said ‘hey, you should come out here.’ So I did, and the rest of history,” he said.So is the game Sunday. But don’t tell Vlad, he’s too busy working.THE DAILY NEWS - SATURDAY, JANUARY 6, 2018

UAE go down fighting against Haiti

MENAFN - Khaleej Times) The UAE fought hard but lost 1-0 to Haiti in a friendly match at Khalifa bin Zayed Stadium in Al Ain on Friday. Significantly, this was the first assignment for new coach Alberto Zaccheroni and would have given him an ample idea about work to be done in defence. After the initial moments taken to settle down, both teams played some sublime football. Teams went forward looking for gaps to find a way to score. The UAE had the first attempt on goal. It was a three-pass try with Omar Abdulrahman finding Ahmed Al Hashmi, who set it up for Amer Abdulrahman but the final delivery lacked bite.Minutes later the Haitians made the home side pay dearly for the missed chance. It was a crafty goal orchestrated by Derrick Etienne, who waded past at least five players to find Kevin Lafrance, who passed onto striker Duckens Nazon in the box. The Coventry City striker's ripper rebounded from the woodwork to hit Mahmoud Khamees and back into the goal as keeper Khalid Eisa stood helpless.Following the strike, the UAE responded with vigour. There were long-range posers from Mahmoud Khamees and 'Amoory' but Haiti defence and keeper Johny Placide were up to the task. Both teams had set a tight defence and worked offside traps well. There were no more goals in the half. After the break, the UAE started with a blitz but were unlucky.Mohanad Salem had a powerful header crash into the post. Later Khamis Esmaeel's volley struck the woodwork. Omar tested Haiti goal with a curling free kick. And at the stroke of an hour, his shot rebounded from the post.A 64-minute effort encapsulated the UAE's unlucky outing. A rampaging Walid Abbas had a decent shot blocked by keeper and the rebound fell onto Omar's leg but the talisman couldn't find target from inside the box. The UAE maintained pressure, were consistent but Haiti defence and timber denied an equaliser. At the other end, an alert Khalid Eisa kept a goal-bound shot. The UAE had to change the trend and introduction of young Khalfan Mubarak and Tariq Ahmed spiced up the mix. And in the dying minutes, Khamees almost made amends with a thunderous long-ranger but the ball whizzed past the right post. There were more chances, long and close, and a last-minute header from Mohanad Salem too but there was no equaliser. The UAE kept knocking on the door and even tried to break in but were denied by Haiti defence, keeper and skipper Placide and resolute woodwork. The UAE next play Uzbekistan on Tuesday.By MENAFN | November10, 2017

Out of the Slums of Haiti Evens Pierre is the No. 1 WBA Contender

Sun City is one of the world’s poorest, crime and disease ridden places in the world. It’s a sprawling shanty town on the outskirts of Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Hope seems to have no place in this wretched, forbidden area of the Earth. Out of this comes Evens Pierre who has worked his way up to the No. 1 contender for the title WBA champion Jorge Linares now holds at lightweight.Pierre is 29-1 (19), at 33 years of age. He goes by the nickname “The Sun City Kid”. He is promoted by Jacques Deschamps a businessman of French extraction who has put time and money into the career of Pierre because Pierre is a role model. His hope is to have Pierre fight Linares for the title.Pierre goes to Evangelical groups to speak against drugs and crime. He buys food that he sends to Sun City. He plans to open a boxing school. If Deschamps is able to have Pierre fight in Haiti, it will be a momentous event probably held at the national soccer stadium that can probably hold 20,000 people. The poor people in Haiti have very little to cheer about and having Pierre fight for a world title would make that unlucky country proud. “Even if I make a lot of money I will never leave Sun City,” said Pierre.Pierre holds the WBA Fedelatin Lightweight title that he won stopping Nicaraguan Rene Gonzalez, 31-6-1, back in November of 2014 for the second time. In his lone fight in May of 2015 he defended that title defeating Jesus Cruz Biblano, 15-9, of Mexico, by an 11 round decision. In 2016 he defended that title twice. In April he defeated Tomas Mendez, 21-6, of the Dominican Republic and in November in his biggest win he defeated former WBA & IBF champion Juan Carlos Salgado, 26-6-1, of Mexico. In March of 2017 he stopped Alfonso Perez, 12-8, of Venezuela, in 8 rounds in a non-title bout. In his most recent fight in October he defended the title and knocked out Jesus Laguna, 21-10-2, of Mexico in five rounds.Pierre’s first twenty-four fights were in Panama up until the Gonzalez fight at the Caribe Convention Center in Petionville, Port-au-Prince, where his last six fights have taken place.Linares, 43-3 (27) is from Venezuela but resides in Japan and has defended his WBA title he won in September of 2016 twice. He lost in his first attempt in 2011 for the WBC title but won that vacant title in 2014 in his last appearance in Japan. He defended it twice and gave it up to win the WBA title. Three of his title fight have been in the UK, one in Venezuela and the last at the Forum in Inglewood, CA, defeating the now No. 3 contender Luke Campbell of the UK. Linares held the same title that Pierre now holds when he fought for the world title.Pierre’s only loss was in his thirteenth fight losing to Rosano Lawrence, 12-9-1, of Panama, in April of 2010, due to the fact the referee penalized him three points. He reversed that loss three fights later stopping Lawrence in six rounds. He is on a seventeen fight win streak since his only loss. He won the WBA Fedelatin title back in July of 2010 just prior to the re-match with Lawrence defeating Augusto Pinilla, 14-3-1.Pierre is not only a No. 1 contender but an example how someone from one of the poorest countries in the world can make something out of himself and be a role model on top of it. With his promoter Deschamps backing him he should be fighting for the WBA world title in 2018. The only question is “where?”By: Ken Hissner
